Mothers Day is an annual event celebrated every year to honor mothers and motherhood by several countries across the globe. The day celebrates motherhood and is a time to appreciate mothers and mother figures in our lives.
This year, the day, which falls on different dates in different countries, is observed on May 8 in India. The day was earlier celebrated on the second Sunday of May but was changed to May 8 after being declared a public holiday under the Negotiable Instruments (Amendment) Bill 2017.
The idea behind the Mother’s Day celebration came from Julia Ward Howe after the American Civil War. She suggested that June 2 be celebrated as Mother’s Day in 1872. However, Anna Jarvis created the modern Mother’s Day by holding a memorial for her mother at St Andrew’s Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia. The first official Mother’s Day celebration occurred at the same church on May 10, 1908.
The tradition of celebrating Mother’s Day spread quickly in other parts of the world, and many countries declared it a national holiday to honor mothers across their land.
