What comes to your mind when I say the Word “Piracy’? I guess you think of it as a theft of content and other people’s work without the proper permission or paying them. Most of the population argue that piracy is really bad, but with all the bad propaganda and negativity around piracy, we can appreciate it. Consider the example of “Game of Thrones” it is one of the most popular TV series in history. Still, it is also one of the most pirated TV series on the internet. Still, the popularity of this TV series has grown a lot with piracy. People all across the globe came to know about this TV Show because of the torrent sites, which helps the creators earn a large revenue in the long term. We are not defending piracy; it is the worst thing digital media faces nowadays.

Many important media houses have accepted that piracy has helped their content reach a vast part of the population. In an interview with BBC, Gilligan, the creator of Breaking Bad, said online piracy that piracy has helped his content to reach all parts of the world, which otherwise would have gone unnoticed. Again, he was not implying that piracy is good. He meant that a better understanding of the consumer would help both the audience and the content creators.

Why People Prefer Piracy?

  • Cost- The first reason people prefer piracy is the subscription cost that many users have to pay individually. Many Ott service providers: Netflix, Apple TV, HBO Max, Hulu and Disney plus. All this costs a ton for a normal user.
  • Complexity in Accessing Content-As mentioned above, many platforms offer different types of content. We, as a consumer wants to access every piece of information at a single point, and thus, torrent sites are the perfect choice where you can find it all at one point.

Final Words

Many people want to pay for content but find it very difficult to access all the content on a single platform. Previously, Netflix was a one-stop destination, but that has changed as many streaming services have popped us and offered many interesting contents. And there is no doubt there are many who wants to watch content for free using piracy. To combat piracy, everyone has to come on a single page. Content creators have to make content easily accessible at a good price. As consumers, we have to remember our responsibility and consume media through legal sources.
