Update (2026): Claude for Word launched in beta for Team and Enterprise customers and became generally available in May 2026, alongside Claude for Excel and PowerPoint, on every paid Claude plan. A Claude for Outlook add-in is in public beta. This guide covers what it does, who it is for and how it compares with Microsoft Copilot.

AI is moving out of separate chat windows and into the tools people already use all day. Anthropic’s Claude for Microsoft Word is a clear example: instead of copying text into a chatbot and pasting the answer back, you work with Claude inside the document itself. It is also a direct challenge to Microsoft, which sells its own AI assistant, Copilot, for the same apps.

What is Claude for Word?

Claude for Word is an add-in that puts Anthropic’s Claude in a sidebar inside Microsoft Word. You can ask it to draft, edit, summarise or review the document you have open. Changes appear as normal Word tracked changes, so you stay in control of what is accepted.

New to Claude? Start with our explainer, Claude AI explained.

Availability and pricing

Claude for Word Microsoft 365 Copilot
Status Generally available since May 2026 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); Outlook in public beta Generally available
Who can use it Any paid Claude plan; Pro (about $20/month) is the minimum Microsoft 365 business customers with a Copilot licence
Price Included in the Claude subscription, separate from Microsoft 365 About $30 per user per month on top of Microsoft 365
Platforms Word on Windows and Mac Microsoft 365 apps
Installation Microsoft AppSource or admin deployment through the Microsoft 365 admin centre Built in

Enterprise customers can also route Claude through cloud platforms such as Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI or Microsoft Foundry. Check Anthropic’s current plan page before buying, as pricing and limits change.

Key features

1. Edits as tracked changes

Claude’s suggestions are inserted as Word tracked changes. You accept or reject them exactly as you would a colleague’s edits, which is essential for contracts and reports that need an audit trail.

2. Chat with your document

Ask questions such as “Summarise this contract”, “Which clauses mention termination?” or “Is the tone consistent?” and get answers that point to the relevant sections.

3. Works with comments

Claude can read comment threads and reply to them, helping teams work through reviewer feedback faster.

4. Respects your formatting

Edits follow the document’s existing styles, headings and numbering, including corporate templates, rather than pasting in unformatted text.

5. Context across Office apps

Claude keeps the context of your conversation when you move between Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Change an assumption in an Excel model and linked figures in a Word memo or PowerPoint chart can be updated to match.

Why Anthropic is targeting lawyers and professional services

Anthropic’s launch messaging focused heavily on legal work, and for good reason. Lawyers live in Word, rely on redlines and need to track every change. Claude for Word can review a contract, propose revisions as tracked changes, explain a clause in plain language and respond to colleagues’ comments. Finance, consulting and policy teams that produce long, formatted documents are the next obvious audience.

Claude for Word vs Microsoft Copilot

  • Model choice. Copilot uses models chosen by Microsoft. Claude for Word gives you Anthropic’s Claude models, which many professionals prefer for long documents and careful writing.
  • Licensing. Copilot is an add-on to Microsoft 365. Claude is part of an Anthropic subscription that also works in the Claude apps and other integrations.
  • Ecosystem. Copilot is deeply wired into Microsoft Graph, Teams and SharePoint. Claude for Word focuses on the document and the Office apps you have open.
  • Strategy. Anthropic is competing inside Microsoft’s own products, a sign that AI assistants are becoming interchangeable layers on top of familiar software.

How it changes everyday document work

Task Before With Claude for Word
Editing Manual line-by-line revisions AI suggestions as tracked changes
Reviewing Reading the whole document Instant summaries and targeted questions
Feedback Long email chains Claude replies to comment threads
Drafting Starting from a blank page First drafts in your template’s style

Limitations and things to check

  • You still need to review. AI can misread context or invent details. Treat every suggestion as a draft.
  • Confidential documents. Check your organisation’s data policies and Anthropic’s enterprise controls before using it on sensitive material.
  • Admin approval. In many companies, IT must approve or deploy the add-in.
  • Outlook beta limits. The Outlook add-in does not yet support mobile apps or on-premises Exchange.

The bigger picture

Claude for Word is part of a wider shift: AI is moving from standalone chat apps into the documents, spreadsheets and inboxes where work happens. That also changes how people find information. Instead of searching, they increasingly ask an assistant, a trend we track in our complete guide to AI search.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude for Word free?

No. It requires a paid Claude plan; the Pro plan is the minimum. It is not included in Microsoft 365 subscriptions.

How do I install Claude for Word?

Install the add-in from Microsoft AppSource and sign in with your Claude account, or ask your IT admin to deploy it from the Microsoft 365 admin centre.

Can Claude edit Word documents automatically?

It proposes edits as tracked changes, which you accept or reject.

Does it work with Excel and PowerPoint?

Yes. Claude for Excel and Claude for PowerPoint are generally available, and Claude keeps context as you move between the apps.

Is Claude better than Copilot in Word?

It depends on your needs. Claude is strong at long-document review and writing quality; Copilot is more tightly integrated with Microsoft 365 data such as Teams and SharePoint.
